I decided over this past weekend that I didn’t like the way the previous owner of our house had the flower garden around our tree in the front yard. So Travis and I went off in search of flower bulbs, flowers to plant, mulch and all the other stuff one needs to plant flowers. Now, I should preface this by saying that I have never in my entire life EVER had an interest in flowers or dirt. The only flowers I like are the kind that get delivered to me in a beautiful vase. I also know nothing about planting flowers. I only know the ones I like. And Travis doesn’t know alot about this stuff either.
So off to the garden store we go. And I must have called my mother a minimum of 10 times. What the hell is the difference between a hardy bulb and a non-hardy bulb? Do I really have to dig up certain flowers in the fall? What will happen if I “forget” to do that? Is it too late to plant these bulbs if the package says plant between March-May? After all, it is almost the end of May, will these bloom this summer or next? And my list of questions during my frantic phone calls only grew more panicky as time went on. I quite literally almost had a panic attack at the damn store! I have never felt so unprepared or inadequate about anything in my life!
Started planting the little bulbs and finished up last night. That was not so much fun either. I just don’t apparently enjoy digging in the dirt. So I supervised and showed travis where to dig and plant. And I was a much happier camper. I enjoyed sitting on a paper bag in the grass. After all, I didn’t want my butt to get wet
Now everything is planted, and it had better grow and bloom from June through August like the packages said. I expect to see pretty stargazer lillies, calla lillies, tall cannas and hydrangeas ( I know I just misspelled that last one) in a couple of months…it better be worth all the anxiety!
Hydrangeas are bushes, and may take awhile. Your flower choices are beautiful, and the way you chose them cracked me up! But mainly because that’s similar to the way it went down for me as well. My mother loves gardening, and I’ve given her free rein in my flower beds. We consult about what I like, tell her what I’m thinking and would like to achieve, and she introduces me to some new things. I defer to her wisdom, and let her putter about to her heart’s content. But I’ve learned a little in the process.
For lower maintenance gardens, go with perennials; they come up every year. Annuals are beautiful, but only last for their one season; you have to replant each year. I wouldn’t bother trying to grow annuals from seeds; just buy, plant and enjoy them while they last. Also, watch out for weather conditions/environmental factors. How much sun does a particular plant like, and how much sun does the spot where you want to plant it actually get? How much moisture does it like/can it take? And most important of all:
How often can you get Travis to weed for you? *G*
It all sounds like fun (minus the weeding) and I can’t wait to hear how your first adventures in gardening turn out. :0)
I’m currently, ie slowely, cleaning up our yard and the bushes/garden areas around the house. I’m tired of the weeds that have overtaken them, it makes us look like po white trash lol. Of course I have trouble figureing out what is a weed sometimes, so if I dig up a plant oh well!
If you need any bulb advice let me know! Stargazer lilies are winter hardy, cannas and calla lilies are not. Hydrangeas need mulch and some protection from cold winters.
What is your garden zone? Do you get long snowy winters?
Somehow i missed the point. Probably lost in translation
Anyway … nice blog to visit.
cheers, Brachial.
